Top 10 Cricket Captains For All Time

Cricket is the game in which a captain has to play a very important role, he has to take many decisions in ground and if his decisions work every one praise him but un luckily if his decision do not give right result then he is cursed. It is not easy to decide top 10 captains just on the basis of wining and loosing percentage because you may have noticed most of the Australian captains has very good winning percentage but Australia just win because of their good captaincy? The simple answer should be no because Australian team is team with perfect combination and they don’t win just because of their captains. Their grass root cricket, first class cricket, inter schools cricket are much better than Asian or Carrabin Schools of cricket. So to make a list of top ten captains for all time we will consider all the conditions these captains were provided and the problems they faced

1. Ricky Ponting (Australia)

Major Winning Events: World Cup 2003, ICC champions Trophy 2006, World Cup 2007, and Ashes Series 2006-07.

Major Losing Events: Ashes Series 2005, Ashes Series 2009, Ashes Series 2010-11, ICC World T20 2010, ICC Champions Trophy 2009 and World Cup 2011.

Ricky Ponting, former Australian captain has the winning percentage just below Steve Waugh and he started to lead Australian team in 2004, just after Waugh’s retirement. He led Australian team with true spirit of captaincy and he was an attacking captain. His performance was excellent throughout his captaincy except 2007. He could not perform well even in ODI World Cup 2007 and after this bad experience he resigned from the post of captain of Australian team but overall he was a great captain.

Steve Waugh is considered as the best captain for all time not just because of his great statistics but also because of his positive attitude in extreme tense situations and his great decisions in ground. Waugh always led his team at front foot whenever his team required he gave his best.

He made Australian team unbeatable and his big achievement was success of Australia in ODI World Cup 2003 and during his captaincy Australia wrote history by winning 16 consecutive test matches.

3. MS Dhoni (India)

Dhoni a man of determination he always leads his team with true spirit of leader ship. In Dhoni’s captaincy Indian team united as one unit and now Indians look very passionate and aggressive in ground just they seemed in Ganguly’s captaincy.

Dhoni has proved him one of the best captains for all times because he has best record as captain in India.

4. Gream Smith (South Africa)

Protease has very bad history in all major events and Smith could not do something to overcome this problem and the scenario was similar in his captaincy. South Africa could not win any major title like ICC Champions Trophy, ODI World Cup or World T20 Cup. Though aver all Gream Smith has very good records as a captain but he could not lift his team toward any major victory. Though his winning percentage in ODIs is better than MS Dhoni and even his test record is very good but he is placed at 4th position because he could not get something exceptional and sensational.

Gream Smith has made a record by leading his team in more than 100 test matches.

5. Imran Khan (Pakistan)

Imran Khan, one of the best captains in history of cricket. Though his records are not as impressive as Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh and Dhoni but he is considered as a great captain because he lifted his team in World Cup 1992. In his captaincy Pakistan team got a victory which was not so easy then for a team like Pakistan which was considered as a baby team then but it was Imran’s strategy which got victory for Pakistan.

Imran was a captain more like a dictator, he never compromised on his rules and rights and these are the qualities which differ him from other ordinary captains.

6. Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka)

He was a very present minded captain and his bowling changes and other decisions in ground were worked for Sri Lanka and they became World Champion for the first time.

He has wonderful batting records during his captaincy. He always supports his team through his batting, bowling and even with fielding as a brave captain.

In one days his percentage is even better than Ricky Ponting, according to his winning percentage he should be at number one in the list of top 10 captains for all time but matches in which he led his team were even less than half of those matches in which Ponting Steve Waugh led his team. But he was a great captain and he will be remembered for all time.
